In short
TrueSteps Social is a step counter with friends and groups, made by Exabyte Software Solutions("we"). To compare steps with other people it needs an account, so it sends your steps and a few account details to our server. It does not send your location, and your height, weight, age and sex are never shown to anyone else. It contains no advertising and no analytics or tracking code, and we do not sell your data.
Your account
You sign in with Google. From your Google account we receive and store your name, email address and profile photo, and a Google account ID used to recognise you next time. You can add a username. We never see your Google password.
Your email address is shown only to you, in Your profile. Nobody else sees it, and nobody can find you by it. Your photois shown to other people only if you turn on "Show my Google photo" in Your profile. It is off unless you turn it on; until then others see your initials.
What the app sends to our server
- Your steps, minute by minute: the time, the phone's time zone, the step counts recorded on your phone (by Google Play services while the app is closed, and by the phone's step sensors while it is open), and whether a minute was flagged as a vehicle ride or cycling. The server calculates your daily totals, Active Points, active time and distance from these.
- Your body profile and goals: height, weight, birth year, sex, daily step goal and daily Active Points goal. They are used to calculate your figures and kept so they follow you to a new phone.
- A random installation IDcreated by the app, to keep each phone's steps apart. It is not a hardware or advertising ID.
- A notification token (Firebase Cloud Messaging) for each phone you sign in on, so we can send you notifications.
- Your friendships and groups: requests, who accepted, the groups you create or join, their names and weekly goals, and your role in them.
- Reactions: the emoji you send to a friend or a group member, who they were for and the day. They are deleted after seven days.
- Your notification choices and your photo choice, and which rank and milestone notifications you have already been sent, so none is sent twice.
- Votes you give to upcoming features.
Only when you choose to send it
- Step test results. After a step count test, a switch (on by default, shown next to the Save button) sends the steps you counted, the steps the app recorded, the test's length, and your phone's model, Android version and app version. We use them to measure accuracy on different phones. No minutes and no location are sent.
- Diagnostic reports."Send report" uploads a file of the app's recorded data for the last 3, 7 or 30 days (steps, the app's technical log, activity recognition readings, test results and daily totals), with your note, your phone's model and the app version. It includes GPS location readings only if you tick that option, which is off by default. Reports are deleted after 90 days.
- Feedbackyou write, with your phone's model, Android version and app version.
What stays on your phone
Everything else the app records stays on the phone: location readings(used only to recognise vehicle journeys, so their false steps can be flagged), physical activity readings (walking, in a vehicle, on a bicycle), the app's technical log, your settings and your recent searches. The app is excluded from Android's cloud backup. Your sign-in is stored in encrypted storage on the phone.
Recording steps while the app is closed, and recognising walking and vehicle rides, are done by Google Play services, which is part of Android on your phone. Google describes this step recording as kept on the device; the app reads the steps there and does not use Google Fit or Health Connect. The app also asks the Google Play Store app on your phone whether a newer version is available.
Who can see what
- Anyone on TrueSteps Social who searches for your name or your username can find your name and username (and your photo, if you chose to show it), to send you a friend request. Nobody can find you by your email address. A search shows a short list of matches; nobody can browse the full list of users.
- Your friends (people whose request you accepted, or who accepted yours) see your name and username, and your photo if you chose to show it; your steps, Active Points, active time and distance for today, this week and all time; your daily step goal; your rank; and how long ago your phone last sent steps. They never see your calories, height, weight, age or sex.
- Members of a groupyou have joined see your name and username (and your photo, if you chose to show it), your role, and your step totals within the group. A group's admins can invite and remove members.
- Rankings("Ahead of 36% of walkers today", "You're 12th among your friends") are calculated from everyone's totals for today and for all time, but only your own standing is shown to you, and a friend's place among their friends to their friends.
- Reactions. An emoji you send appears beside that person's name for the rest of the day. They, their friends and, on a group's leaderboard, the group's members can see it and that it came from you (your name and username, and your photo if you chose to show it).
- Notifications about you go to others: a friend you walk past may be told, your friends are told when you reach an all-time milestone, a group is told when you join it, and a person is told when you send them a reaction.
Why we use it
- To provide the app: your figures, friends, groups, rankings and notifications.
- To restore your step history when you sign in on a new phone.
- To find and fix problems, using reports, test results and feedback you send.
- To answer you, if you write to us.
We do not use your data for advertising, sell it, or share it with anyone except the service providers below.
Service providers
These companies process data for us, only to run the app:
- Google — sign-in, and delivering notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging).
- Vercel — runs our server and stores diagnostic reports, in the United States.
- MongoDB Atlas — our database.
Your data may therefore be processed outside your country. Every connection between the app and our server is encrypted (HTTPS). Our server logs record each request's type, address, result and timing, but not its contents or your IP address.
TrueSteps Solo
If our TrueSteps Solo app is on the same phone, TrueSteps Social can offer to import its step history. The import happens on the phone, only after you agree, and the imported steps are then sent to our server like your own. See the TrueSteps Solo privacy policy.
How long we keep it
Your account data is kept until you delete your account. Diagnostic reports are deleted after 90 days, and a report that was never finished uploading after one day. Signing out removes your account from the phone, but your steps recorded on the phone stay there until you uninstall the app or clear its storage.
Deleting your account
In the app, open You › Delete account. This immediately deletes your account and everything the server holds about you: profile, steps, friendships, group memberships, reactions you sent and received, notification tokens, step test results, diagnostic reports and their files, feedback and votes. A group you created stays for its other members, and is deleted when its last member leaves. If you no longer have the app, see how to ask us to delete your account.
Your rights
You can see and change your profile, username, goals and notification choices in the app at any time, and delete your account as above. For a copy of your data, or any other request, email us from the address you sign in with.
Children
TrueSteps Social is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If what the app collects or shares changes, we will update this page and the date at the top before that version of the app is released.
