In short
TrueSteps Solo is a step counter made by Exabyte Software Solutions. It has no account, no sign-in and no internet access. Everything it records is stored on your phone and is never sent to us or to anyone else. We have no server that receives data from it, and it contains no advertising, analytics or tracking code.
What the app records, and where it stays
All of the following is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. None of it leaves the phone unless you export it yourself (see below).
- Steps. A count for each minute. While the app is closed, your steps are recorded on the phone by Google Play services, and the app reads them from there. While the app is open, it also reads your phone's built-in step counter and step detector.
- Physical activity. Whether Android thinks you are walking, still, in a vehicle or on a bicycle, with the time. This is used to tell real walking from steps a phone picks up during a ride.
- Location, if you allow it. GPS readings (speed, position and accuracy) taken only while the app is open on your screen, used only to recognise vehicle journeys so their false steps can be flagged. They are not used for maps, ads or anything else.
- Your body profile, if you enter it: height, weight, birth year and sex. Distance, calories and BMI are calculated from these on the phone.
- Goals and settings: your daily step and Active Points goals, theme, language and notification choices.
- Step test results: the steps you counted by hand and the times of each test.
- A technical logof the app's own events (for example when counting started or stopped), used to keep counting reliable. Entries older than 180 days are deleted automatically.
- A random installation IDcreated by the app, used only to label the files you export. It is not your phone's hardware ID or advertising ID.
Permissions the app asks for
- Physical activity — required by Android to read the step sensors, and to recognise walking and vehicle rides.
- Location (precise, while in use) — optional, for the vehicle filter described above. Counting works without it.
- Notifications— to tell you when you reach a daily goal or your weekly target, and for the optional notification showing today's steps (off unless you turn it on). All notifications are created on the phone.
- Start at boot and short background work — so that about every 15 minutes, and after the phone restarts, the app can read the steps your phone recorded and check your goals. The app does not keep a permanent notification, does not run a continuous background service, and does not ask to be exempt from battery optimisation.
Google Play services on your phone
Recording steps while the app is closed, and recognising walking and vehicle rides, are done by Google Play services, which is part of Android on your phone. Google describes this step recording as kept on the device; it does not need a Google account, and TrueSteps Solo does not use Google Fit or Health Connect. The app only reads those steps on the phone and never sends them anywhere.
What we collect
Nothing. The app does not have Android's internet permission, so it cannot send data to us or to any third party. We do not sell, share or transfer your data, because we never receive it.
The app is excluded from Android's cloud backup, so its data is not copied to your Google account either.
When data leaves your phone
Only in these cases, and only because you chose to:
- Export.Settings › Export creates CSV files of your recorded data (including your phone's model and the random installation ID) and opens Android's share sheet. Where they go — email, a chat, cloud storage — is your choice, and that service's own policy then applies.
- TrueSteps Social. If you also install our TrueSteps Social app on the same phone, it can offer to import your step history from TrueSteps Solo. The import happens on the phone, only after you agree in TrueSteps Social, and only an app signed by us can read it. Once imported, the TrueSteps Social privacy policy covers that copy.
Google Play
The app is distributed through Google Play, which handles downloads and updates under Google's own privacy policy. If you have chosen in Android to share usage and diagnostics with app developers, Google may show us anonymous crash reports and install statistics. These do not include the data the app records.
The app asks the Google Play Store app on your phone whether a newer version is available, and can install it through Google Play if you agree. Nothing the app records is involved.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on the phone until you delete it. To delete all of it, uninstall the app, or open Android Settings › Apps › TrueSteps Solo › Storage and tap Clear storage. Because we hold no copy, there is nothing to ask us to delete.
Security
The app's data lives in its private storage, which Android keeps out of reach of other apps. The only exception is the step history described under TrueSteps Social, which is readable only by an app signed with our key.
Children
TrueSteps Solo is intended for adults. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly receive data from anyone, of any age.
Changes to this policy
If the way the app handles data changes, we will update this page and the date at the top before that version of the app is released.
